As valuable a 5-0 defeat as possible for Rochdale?

Ian Watson could take plenty out of losing to Huddersfield in the Jersey Mike's Trophy

Let’s be clear – nobody in football wants to lose matches. And they definitely do not want to lose them 5-0.

And Rochdale’s defeat at Huddersfield Town by that very scoreline in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy (still can’t get my head around typing that) will no doubt be reviewed and analysed internally as any other game is.

Weirdly, despite the scoreline, this was not a game without its moments for a much-changed Dale side, for whom only Ed Francis and Sam Sherring remained from the starting line-up that beat Swindon Town at the weekend.

In the main, though, Huddersfield’s higher-league quality showed with the Terriers ruthlessly punishing the visitors’ shortcomings.
