WERE it not for his Mum, Ian Watson may never have been a coach.
In that sense, Rochdale fans have a lot to thank Mrs Watson for after signing her teenaged son up for what would turn out to be a life-changing bit of work experience.
Through a playing career that saw him take in some of non-league’s most recognisable names in his native north east, the dream of leading his own team from the touchline had been born.
“I was 15 and it was a work experience thing,” The Dale’s new boss said as he recalled his first taste of coaching in an exclusive interview with The Pearl Street Post.
